On my 50th Birthday, I gifted myself an online MBA: Sarina D’Silva Menezes “It was always a heartfelt desire to pursue a Masters Degree in Business from a reputed University and I am pleased to have chosen Manipal University Jaipur. They have a good understanding of busy work lives and this for me was an opportunity to fulfil a desire right where I am,” says Sarina D Menezes, Head & Vice President- Brand Marketing & Corporate Communication at Oberoi Realty Ltd who has had an illustrious career of over 30 years with multiple hospitality and real estate luxury brands. (Receiving the distinguished alumnus award from Welcome Group School of Hotel Administration, Manipal University, 2018) Sarina started her BA degree in Economics, Psychology and Sociology at St Xavier’s College Mumbai but soon realized she wanted to pursue a professional course and stumbled upon WGSHA at Manipal University (now MAHE) that offered a degree in hotel management & hospitality in collaboration with ITC Hotels. Making her a former Manipal University Alumnus too. (Sharing a moment with renowned chef Vikas Khanna) The initial stages of her career were focused on developing business skills and finding opportunities to grow as a leader. However, having always known that she enjoys working and interacting with people – be it customers or colleagues in the service industry, she picked roles that involved plenty of opportunities for human interaction and connectivity. “I started off in Sales and Business Development in the luxury hospitality industry. Starting with ITC Hotels and then moving to Oberoi Hotels. Being a very demanding and fast paced industry, I did not have the time to think or pursue an MBA. Besides I was enjoying the steep learning curve and every aspect of the industry. In 1996, I was approached by a hospitality veteran who was starting India’s first private membership club and that was an opportunity to make my foray into Branding and Marketing. I realized that my strength was in using storytelling, creativity and innovation as a Brand Custodian.
How Gaurav Kokitkar is creating his roadmap to success in his startup through our online degree Meet Gaurav, a determined online learner hailing from the picturesque town of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. With a background in science, Gaurav didn’t want to pursue engineering and defied convention by following his passion for visual storytelling, embarking on a journey into the world of fashion photography with a BA degree. However, he didn’t want to pursue a career in fashion photography and wanted to pursue it as a hobby. Moreover, his attention grew towards starting a business of his own. It was in November 2019 when Gaurav decided to kickstart his business, when he was interning at an advertising agency in Bengaluru. This was also when the first case of Covid broke out. However, he didn’t want to pause his idea and he took the leap. A startup idea from his roots His startup idea rooted from the place he belongs to- Ratnagiri. Ratnagiri, a city in Maharashtra, is popular for Alphonso mangoes. Seasonal Alphonso mangoes are regarded as on e of the fruit’s best types in terms of sweetness, richness, and flavor. In comparison to other mango types, Alphonso mangoes are generally 20% more expensive. The Ratnagiri Alphonso mango is rather expensive, but its taste and quality make up for its high cost. Wondering how this led to his startup idea? Let’s explore. Organic Alphonso mangoes right from the farmers’ produce “Wanted to help my farmers” “I drew inspiration from my father for my startup. He was a government employee in the agricultural sector. I was already well-connected with several farmers in Ratnagiri, which is famous for alphonso mangoes. I knew the struggles they went through to sell those mangoes. In cities, sellers make up to 20-30% of their profits selling mangoes. But, in Ratnagiri, farmers don’t make profits as most of the money is lost to middlemen, who fix the price for the mangoes. I wanted to break that chain. So, I started a venture which helps farmers sell mangoes directly to the customer. “Mymango” is an e-commerce platform that allows farmers to directly sell their produce to the final consumer.” So far, Gaurav has had over 1,000 clients in 1 year. Farmers who benefitted from Gaurav’s startup “My business taught me patience” Gaurav’s startup experience was life altering for him. He faced new challenges every day and overcame them. The best learning during his journey was patience, he says. “I think patience is the best lesson I learnt. Because during Covid, there were many logistical issues that we had to face. From gathering the produce to packaging, the entire process was challenging. When we started off, we only had the idea but didn’t have the resources to get into the market. It was a tough period, I would say. Soon enough, we got in touch with multiple stakeholders like our delivery partners and began to distribute our products all While his business was running successfully, he decided to pursue an online MBA. “Wanted to gain entrepreneurial expertise” “During my startup journey, I was exposed to several challenges in terms of expenditures, marketing and sales. I realized that he needed to enhance in knowledge in finance. So, I wanted to pursue an MBA to gain the entrepreneurial expertise that I lacked.” “I enhanced my financial skills through this online MBA” After his research, Gaurav decided to choose Manipal University Jaipur for his online MBA. Impressed with the flexibility that the degree offers, Gaurav pursued his online MBA in Finance to enhance his knowledge and hone his financial skills. “From the management perspective, there are many subjects like HR, which really interested me. Through this degree, I realized how important it is to keep my employees happy. I always assumed they were a liability to my company. Only after pursuing my MBA, I realized that they are in fact as asset to my business and company,” Gaurav says. Another reason why Gaurav chose an online MBA is because he wanted to study at his own pace and time. “The weekend lectures were great. I usually study during the night, so it was easy for me to balance work and academics. The curriculum was industry relevant and helped me gain knowledge in several aspects of business. I must say that the LMS was excellent. It was user-friendly and all the content was available in one place. The LMS saves student data so efficiently that it is easier for me to revisit the same content,” Gaurav says.

Let’s take a deep dive into her inspiring journey. Sharmishta’s family “My father is the principal of Mohanbhog Government School, and my mother provides unwavering support in the family’s journey. I have a brother who is an ENT specialist. Our family is complete with the joyous presence of our daughter, who is in 4th grade,” she says. Truly passionate about Shitō-ryū martial arts After work, Sharmistha dedicatedly practices Shitō-ryū martial arts for three hours daily. Speaking about her experience learning the art form, she says, “The training sessions presented a unique challenge as I found myself alongside small children, and managing these kids was a considerable challenge. At times, I felt a bit uncomfortable, but as time progressed, I discovered enjoyment in their company. Over time, I learned to handle situations with composure and confidence, focusing on the skills and knowledge I was gaining. I also managed office work and training simultaneously.” “Martial arts improved my mental wellbeing.” “Engaging in martial arts not only improved my physical fitness but also my mental well-being. The regular practice left me feeling energised, active, and notably more confident, even when going out alone during odd hours,” Sharmistha adds. Well, there’s more to Sharmistha’s passion and interests; in 2019, she enrolled her daughter in a karate class under the International Achievers Shitō-ryū Karate Association of India. Intrigued by learning self-defence and inspired by her active and hardworking nature, Master M. Philips Raj suggested she join the class too. Shitō-ryū Karate: an effective self-defense technique Shitō-ryū Karate, a prominent Okinawan style founded by Kenwa Mabuni in the early 20th century, transcends being just a martial art; it’s a journey of discipline, resilience, and self-discovery. Emphasising that progress goes beyond speed and strength, Shitō-ryū focuses on refining techniques, sharpening minds, and perfecting character in the dojo. Each strike and stance symbolize a commitment to self-improvement and sculpting not just the body but one’s character. Guided by principles of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit, Shitō-ryū not only makes one a martial artist but a better human being. The essence of this art lies in personal growth, not just belts or tournament victories. Speaking about where her desire for martial arts and Karate stemmed, she says, “Firstly, my motivation stemmed from a desire to empower my daughter with physical strength to ensure her safety. My personal experiences at the workplace became an additional catalyst for my journey into Shitō-ryū. In the office environment, I often felt a sense of discomfort. To address this and enhance my confidence and fitness, I made the deliberate decision to join Shitō-ryū martial arts.” “As you train, let your passion fuel your perseverance. Embrace the discipline, for it’s the foundation upon which your success in both karate and life will be built. Life is too short; learn whatever you like, which gives you peace and happiness,” Sharmistha adds. “Every girl should learn martial arts to empower and safeguard themselves. Step onto the dojo with courage, focus on goals, and let Shitō-ryū’s spirit lead you to become the best version of yourself, both within and beyond the dojo,” Sharmistha feels. Apart from her love for karate and martial arts, Sharmistha is a passionate dancer. Along with her special interest in singing, yoga, and swimming, she was selected for the RD national camp from the NCC 3 PB battalion group in 2010. A successful professional journey spanning 8 years Sharmistha is an engineering graduate. After completing her undergrad, she obtained a diploma in product design in Bangalore. She then started working as a quality manager and has eight years of professional experience. “My professional journey began in 2010 at Ramky Group, where I served as a resources engineer (O2) in Kolkata and Tripura. Later, I transitioned to Jesmajo Industrial Fabrication Karnataka Pvt. Ltd. in Bangalore, taking on the role of plant coordinator. In 2016, I joined the Merit Research Society in Agartala, Tripura, as a science teacher. From 2018 to 2021, I contributed significantly to Air Action Equipment in Bangalore as a quality manager. Roshan Yadav, who is a pilot by profession, is pursuing his online BCA from Manipal University Jaipur. We caught up in a candid conversation with him to explore the world of flying through his eyes. So, let’s delve in. “I was fascinated by planes since childhood” Roshan was always fascinated by airplanes and the idea of flying. Ever since he was a child, he would look up at the sky and watch airplanes soaring overhead, and he knew that he wanted to be a part of that world too. He did his research and discovered how it was like to become a pilot and became even more determined to pursue a career in aviation. “For me, the best part of being a pilot is the experience of flying. I never get tired of the feeling of soaring through the sky, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to do it as part of my job. Every flight is a new adventure, and I love the sense of freedom,” he said. “Every day as a pilot is new and challenging” Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a pilot looks like? Well, here’s what Roshan explained. “My daily routine as a pilot keeps changing depending on my flight schedule. However, when I am assigned a flight, my routine typically involves a few hours of preparation before departure. This includes reviewing the flight plan, checking for weather conditions, and briefing the crew members. Once we’re in the air, my main focus is operating the flight safely and efficiently, while also ensuring that the passengers are comfortable and well taken care of. After landing, I complete post-flight procedures and return home for some much-needed rest and relaxation.” “My daily routine as a pilot keeps changing depending on my flight schedule. They offer a level of flexibility and convenience that longer flights can’t match. Short flights allow me to rest and recharge between flights, and I find them less exhausting than longer flights,” he added. “Unexpected challenges have made me a better pilot” The life of a pilot can be quite challenging, be it the training or the flight itself. It is important for pilots to possess certain qualities and characteristics to ensure a safe flight. Roshan Yadav recollected one such incident in the past that changed his perspective about flying. “I cannot forget that moment during my training, when an engine of the plane caught fire. It was a scary and chaotic moment, but it also taught me a valuable lesson about staying calm and focused on the face of unexpected challenges. I’m grateful for the experience, as it helped me become a better and more confident pilot,” he said. “I love flying to Nepal” Every pilot has a favorite destination to fly to, and for Roshan, it’s the country he belongs to- Nepal. “As a proud Nepalese, my favorite destination to fly to is Nepal,” he said. Amidst his busy schedule as a pilot, Roshan zest for continuous learning led him to pursue an online BCA degree. “I’m pursuing this degree as part of my ongoing efforts to advance my career in aviation to become a captain. I believe that the knowledge and skills I’m gaining through this program will help me grow in this field,” he said. Here’s what Roshan had to say for aspiring pilots. “My number one piece of advice for someone looking to become a pilot is to be prepared to work hard and stay focused. This profession requires a high level of dedication, attention to detail, and responsibility. My other advice would be to stay calm and composed, even in stressful situations, and to always prioritize safety above all else.”
